Hi Jim,

My memory is not perfect, but when I overhauled and rebuilt my AN/FGC-25 (TT-117/FG printer and TT-179/FG reperforator) in 1977, I soaked all of the felt clutch pads overnight in a strong solvent. I think it might have been carburetor cleaner but cannot recall exactly. I do recall that they came out great. Their natural color is white. Some of them had some residual staining but all were sufficiently soft and pliable prior to reassembly and oiling.

I would probably try "Goof-Off" solvent next time, if I ever feel the need to restore the pads in my set. "Goof-Off" can be used on many fabrics such as carpet without harm. During the resurrection of my set starting two years ago, I chose to not disassemble the clutches. Instead, I performed an initial oiling of all the pads, and then several months later, but prior to initial operation, I oiled them all again. They seemed to take the oil OK and my set has been working fine. It is probably time to oil them again.

I have used Goof-Off very successfully to completely dissolve and remove the pitch from Atwater Kent audio transformer cores.
