As I understand it, DOT 3 is the 'original' propylene glycol brake fluid,
with DOT 4 being a later and superior specification, which is both mixable
and back-compatible with DOT 3. But both are PEG - propylene glycol based
working fluids.
DOT 5 is a silicone-based fluid, which is totally incompatible with the DOT
3/4 fluids, and may well be further incompatible with the seal materials
used in DOT 3/4 hydraulic systems. While DOT 5 has significant advantages
over the old glycol-based fluids, a major overhaul is normally required to
switch from DOT 3/4 to DOT 5.
