I do not know what the ribbon material is but maybe it could be 
bonded with a prestoseal device.
A Google search will turn up some info and also there are a couple on 
ebay but on the pricey side. A couple uses of the device are for 
movie film and magnetic
tape splicing. Ampex/Quantegy used the Prestoseal process on tape at 
one point and I ended up with a few of the heating elements. If this technique
seems useful for ribbon bonding and someone wants to experiment I can 
send an interested party a couple.
