If the customer doesn't want a new can type electrolytic, I'll leave the
old one in place "for appearance." And mount the new ones below the
chassis.
I restore vintage tube gear as well, and this is SOP for pretty much any
situation where the unit requires new filter caps, yet the owner (or the
equipment..) requires the original external appearance.
The new-production FP-type cans seem to have held up well over the years,
and they can be a quick route to a clean & professional PSU rebuild. But
for the most part, they are only available in voltages spec'd for tube
equipment. I don't know of anyone currently making new FP / twist-lock cans
that are in the 10-50V range needed by most computer (or other SS) gear.
In those cases, it may not even be practical to leave the old parts
in-situ, as the new ones cannot be made to fit entirely within the chassis.
Your best solution may be to remove the old cans, and use modern 1-3/8"
clamp-mounted caps in their place; a couple of small holes might need to be
made. Low-voltage caps - being of relatively high values - are only one or
two sections, though, and it's often possible to get clever (or just lucky)
and create a novel mix of above and below-chassis-mounted parts, to fit the
needs.
