They handled the factor of the cable slow speed better.  Instead of a
dash being 3 times as long as a dot, it was the same length as a dot.

They pushed the speed of signaling up to the point where there was
intersymbol interference, so the receiving operators had to learn to
interpret what they saw on the inked tape.  You can find some examples
in Western Union Technical Review.
