Here's a link to a discussion on a typewriter forum about the demise
of Ames Supply Co. and their platen re-covering business.

Ames Supply Co. was in business to provide parts and tools for the
typewriter repair business. It was the go-to place for getting platens
redone. They had an office locally and turn around was a day or two.
I seem to remember that the price for a M28/35 friction feed platen was
about seven or eight dollars in the early 70s. I checked the Teletype
Parts Price Book for February, 1973, and the price for a 150718 platen
was $10.40. The price in the November, 1974, price book was $12.80.
The platens that they did were always of the highest quality; I never
had a problem with their re-covered platens.
The comments section mentions all of the present day players in the
platen business. They also mention the brake fluid wipe procedure.
