I'm impressed.  The Model 33 I am working on had some serious problems, but none as bad as I see in your before photos.

The correct term for the piece you are describing is the Call Control Unit, or UCC.  Various options on the call control unit included various dial mechanisms, but the basic UCC is just a small power supply, relay and circuit board, plus a rats-nest of wires and connectors to all the subsystems of the Teletype. As you can see, I didn't have to deal with rust.  The machine seems to have survived for 45 years since it was rebuilt by Carterphone Corp. without ever being left to rust.  The machine was built circa 1965 (it is an early model).
