Well they sure all give 599 still today, even if they have to ask for a repeat 10 times!

Back before there were home computers, a few hams mechanized the RTTY contest operation using MXDx (multiple-head transmitter-distributors) where they could get them, and tapes to automate the contest exchange.
One tape for CQ, one tape for thanks and QRZ, one tape asking for repeats, one tape giving the contest message, etc.
I found it rather irritating that they always gave a 599 signal report rather than a true report.
