Regarding the cheapo 99c "CP2102" USB to serial modules we were talking about
last week: 

I ordered a few real CP2102 chips and did some microsurgery to remove the fake
chips that come with the modules and install real ones from Digikey.  They are a 
leadless and fine-pitch chip package, but the swap was not horrible, and it 
does work as expected afterward including using the SiLabs programming utility 
to set 600 and 1800 bps to 45 and 75 baud (which are all the teletype-compatible 
speeds I tried). 

Another amusing thing I noticed was that the real CP2102 chips show their serial
number as "001" and the fake ones are "31337001" 

anyway, it's possible and not that painful.
