I recall seeing one in the mid-1960s at Seymour Johnson AFB, NC. They had a link between, if I recall correctly,  the control tower and a 1-man observation station at the runways. IIRC, it was to relay the local ground wind & visibility info to the tower.

Does anyone remember these and used to work on them as well.  We had these on Kadena and the teletype maintenance guys were responsible for keeping them running (although in my case without any formal training) mostly between the weather guys and aircraft controllers.
