[GreenKeys] Gear Shift comments...

The faster the machines run the more they need accurate adjustment and
more frequent lubrication.
One exception is the M37 that uses a two stop selector clutch and is
"comfortable" at 150 wpm...
with an electronic speed convertor the 37 is fun to watch as it "huts
and pecks"

I have gone through several gear shift mechanisms over the years.
The steel versions need to be carefully adjusted per the BSP and
rechecked whenever
a different typing unit is put in the base. Regular greasing is
required.
If the adjustments are not carefully done the gears wear out very
quickly.

The nylon versions are more forgiving and add almost no noise at all.
These shifters also need grease as does the actuating mechanism.

I never change the speed unless the machine is stopped and then use my
index finger
on the fan to turn the motor by hand while moving the speed actuator.

Bottom line is... if you do not need a shifter, why install one?

P.S. The AN/UGC-77 is supposed to be able to shift while running but
there is NO WAY I would trust it.

28 gearshift-How noisy should it be?

This 28KSR with LK3RN101 keyboard/base has a 3-speed gearshift. The
steel
gears seem a lot noisier than the other gearshift KSR I have which is
a 28
compact and a different gearshift design. Is this typical or do I need
to
do more grease and adjustment work? Also when I power off, the motor
stops
fairly quickly, maybe 1-2 printer cycles.
Should it coast longer?
This KSR has been a rodent residence so maybe still needs some
more cleaning out.
But I now have the keyboard and typing unit working OK at 60wpm. Take
that,
mouses.
