Yep, I was given a 6 transistor radio when I was 10 or 11, I guess. When it quit working years later I took it all apart. Still have a few of the parts in my junk box, I bet. Transistors are nice for lightweight, low power, instant-on. But they can't give the mystique that comes with sitting in a dark room at night, roaming the wavelengths with only the light of the filaments & maybe a pilot lamp & the moonlight thru a window. And the smells... transistors smelled like plastic, whether off or on, but tube radios had many scents: warm metal, wax, glass, bakelite. And they smelled different when they came to life than when turned off. It's like the difference between an e-book and a real old hardback.

Kids these days... don't know what they're missing... mumble-mumble... :-)
