Well, I think mostly the availability of computers and the
internet. I got interested in electronics very early. I began to build
stuff when I was around 12, same time I became serious about
photography. I built a few simple things from scratch and then built a
Heathkit oscilloscope. Communication was via ham radio. Now the
computers do everything and communication is via the internet and i
phones etc. One does have to know something to work computers right but
its different knowledge. I like to restore old radios and machinery but
I am old fashioned in some ways. OTOH, I like up to date computers.
There are probably more smart kids around than you think but kids get
bad press.
