a while back we bought a group of extel parts... crystals, belts (
some even still good) and much misc.
when we get to trying to stage our Extel IO will try to re-belt it.

Ed,
thanks for adding that about the one-ply NCR impact paper.
The Extel printers used by the wire services were bought with either the
impact paper or the ribbon printing, although I'd guess the ribbon printing
machine would work with the impact paper.
One point on the ribbon printing Extels, the coarser TTY ribbons didn't
work too well with the Extels. The Extel printer head used 7 needles (maybe
more?) and required the finer thread count of the nylon ribbons so the
needles would not snag on the ribbons.

A lot of the Extel printers were ribbonless and used a special impact
sensitive paper from 3M that must have been expensive. Other Extel
printers were fitted with ribbons and could use ordinary paper. So
far as I know you can't get the impact sensitive paper anymore, so
Extel printers without the ribbon mechanism are dead.
