I can't really speak for what UPI did but I was with the AP for 9 
years.  We never used autostart on any of our machines.  They basically 
ran 24/7.  There wasn't really much idle time on any of the circuits.  
The Model 15s & 20s generally pounded entire time.  My first involvement 
in setting M15s up with autostart was when I was helping area Navy MARS 
stations in setting up their machines.
