Chris,
As Jim said, it reads the tape in parallel, then a mechanical
parallel-to serial converter combined it with the data from 2-4 other
tapes to produce a multiplexed serial data stream.
We may have some information on it in the AWA Museum Library, but I
think the schematic of it is pretty straight-forward. They where
designed in the 1910-20 period and used up into the 1930-40 period.
