[GreenKeys] Teletype in Portable Case

I worked for a company call Vernitron in 1969. They built acoustic modems and

repackaged 33KSR’s into plastic vacuum-formed cases to be used as “transportable”

terminals. They had a Vernitron label on the front. Standard 33ASR’s were configured with casters.

They purchased 33’s from Teletype by the tractor-trailer load. The

acoustic modems were marginal and the after-sale service was worse. I was

a bench technician working on fixing production line modems that would not

work. I also did some work on the 33’s. I found one of the modems at a

ham fest many years later…never saw one of the 33’s.

We had two Bell System “Dataphone” 33ASR’s in the office that we used as test

machines. In those days, Ma Bell also had a local phone number that sent

FOX at 110 baud using Bell 100 series modem tones. When the guy who

ran the Teletype assembly group needed a part, he’d take it off one of the

Ma Bell machines, and call in a trouble. The Ma Bell TTY man would show

up, replace the missing part, and leave(!). One day I asked him if they were

hiring and in two weeks I was a Ma Bell TTY man! Vernitron “data systems” disappeared

a year later.

What a country!

I know its definitely a model 33 with ESC kybd. It may be sprocket feed as I see no provision for paper roll, just a tray to lay some fan-fold paper in. But I also see a slot for the paper release on the right which would mean its a FF. I have seen something like this before, in person sometime in my TTY career. I couldn't remove the printer without a lot of work, so I didnt. It was an ASR, quite heavy, but with a lid and carrying handle.

Unfamiliar to me. The fact that it has the Teletype logo on the front
suggests it was put together by Teletype, possibly as a trial model that
was never produced. If some other company had repackaged a 33 they
probably would have put their own name on it.

I would assume the hold-down screws were replaced with perhaps shoulder
screws that would allow a very limited amount of motion. Do you know
any more about it than those two pictures?
