While the LINC-8 was a very successful lab machine, the straight-8
was also successful in lab settings -- you could get (and I have)
a multi-channel ADC for it, as well as a 2.5 channel DAC (usually
used for scope output, the 0.5 channel was beam intensity). The
straight-8 I am working on was originally used in a neuropsychology
lab to study things like cat brains while the cats looked at blinking
lights.
