The multi 'bells' are put in because at the time it seemed that there were two standardes in common usage for the printers. One was that the shifted (figs) J and S were reversed. That is one printer standard was for the ' to be over the J key and the 'bell' was over the S key. The other standard had the ' over the S and the 'bell' over the J key.
So when making a tape if the ' was to be printed or several ' were to be printed there was two common ways to make the tapes. One would use the shifted J followed by the shifted S . The other was to send the required number of ' and then the same number of 'bell'.
While not the question, but there were some tapes of bell music. Nothing but the 'bell' and maybe '
on them inerspaced by blanks or ltrs or figs.

But that takes away replicating the feel of the old days: the anticipation of waiting for the broadcast, having to find the signal on the right frequency at the designated time, having to hook up the equipment to the radio, fiddling because you got something wrong and missing half the picture, etc. Ah the conveniences of the mode

Paul and all:
Funny you should mention that - the tapes I received were full of errors and dropouts. I tried to fix them the best I could.
I myself have never received pix VIA RTTY, but I understand what you are saying....It must have been enough to tear your hair out. LOL
Does anyone have any information as to why these tapes had multiple "bells" inter spaced throughout??? Was it to keep you awake? ;-)
Also - I noticed with interest about the replication of the print hammers - I think it was for the 33?
A while back someone mentioned the replication of the print hammers for the typing reperf. Was there any interest in that?
I don't think we would need ten thousand.
Tom
