Back in the day...You know, 10 miles of snow, bare foot, up hill both
ways...
I got my first Model 15 in 1972. I bought a Model 19 in 1974.
Of course, NEITHER came with any documentation.
So out came the trusty ohm meter, continuity buzzer, a pad of quad paper
and a #2 pencil. The model 15 wasn't so bad, but F*** me that model 19
was everything to everybody and then some. More wires than Carter had
pills.
The problem with old Teletype equipment, especially the 15 and 19 stuff,
is that it's at least 60 years old and most of it was taken out of regular
service 50 years ago. How many people have had their monkey little paws
inside playing "Screw Teletype, *I* know what *I'm* doing."?
Having the original documentation is nice, but it's almost next to worth-
less trying to figure out what some "inventive" person has done in the mean
time.
So, grab a pot of coffee, iced tea or other favorite beverage, sit down and
go step by step through each piece and document things as the are rather
than what they should be.
The fun part of doing this, is you also get a fairly good idea of what they,
meaning Teletype, were actually thinking to begin with.
While you're in there, look closely at all the mechanical bits and make note
of the things that appear to have sticky grease gluing them together. You're
going to need to clean that up too.
