Yes, for all manner of interfacing between the teletypes and the internet. 
Be sure you're looking at Javier's rewrite 
(http://www.albinarrate.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=51:heavymetal)
rather than the earlier version by Bill Buzbee. Even Javier's version is pretty
static but it works for me in Linux. 
I would not want to undertake the programming job to replace it.
