Jeff's comments on his Lorenz Lo15 spurred me to show what I have been
working on.

Thanks to Ed# for alerting us to the East German T-63. One of my
friends and I bought it and it arrived here from Slovakia in reasonable
shape. It is unique in that it has three levels of "shift": Latin
characters, Cyrillic characters and Figures. The "Blank" character
[00000] shifts to Cyrillic. This model is a clone of the Siemens T-37
and was manufactured in East Germany for the Soviets from the early
1950s up into the 1980s. The T-63 was the model used in the original
Washington-Moscow Hotline to receive the Russian's messages. (US
messages were sent from a M28ASR.)

The T63 includes a reperf and the unit also came with a tape reader and
a Telex box with loop supply (40 ma, with series coils).

The code for the Cyrillic characters was assigned with similar Latin
sounding characters having the same code. eg, if you send [11111]
[01010] it prints "R"
if you send [00000] [01010] it prints "P"
See the enclosed printout. The only difference between the data sent to
the two lines is that a [00000] was sent between them.

I've been cleaning it up and lubricating it and it runs pretty well with
a continuous stream of data (like from a tape or MMTTY). But I often
get the wrong character if I just type one character at a time.
Apparently something not quite right in the selector mechanism, which is
pretty compact. I have manuals for the Siemens T-37 (thanks, Henning),
but they are in German and I can't read it. I thought I could figure
things out from the diagrams, but so far, they haven't been much help.
So I'm still digging into it.

Have fun,

Duncan
