The W.U. portable Model 31s used speed governed motors.

I happened to read about the sync motor, in a Teletype prodcedural
instruction on how to fill out a certain R&D form. They gave an example
of a properly filled out form, which happened to be a case about putting
a sync motor into the Model 31, as some customer had requested. They
tried some, and the sync motor didn't have enough torque to start in the
machine. Said they could have used a larger starting capacitor, but there
was no room for same, just as there was no room for a larger motor.
So they were asking for additional R&D money to try using belt drive
instead of gear drive, believing that would reduce the starting torque
requirement. I don't know what happened after that.
