Hi
One of the many things that kept Heathkit in business was the Chicago based consumer
electronics industry. The Benton Harbor location was close enough that they could run
their own trucks over to pick up “excess lots” of parts from any of a large number of
companies. They were regular customers for “end of the run” picture tubes at several
Chicago factories. They also grabbed up a lot of end of run components.
How did they make that all work? The kit you got for your TV might not be quite the
same as the kit I got. Lots of paper flying all over the place to make that happen.
Unless the “new guys” can tap into a similar stream of 10 cent on the dollar parts,
they will have a tough time doing the kits at the prices we all remember so fondly.
