Oh, my, I just watched "The Hello Machine" what a wonderful
piece of work. I also discovered at the end that the music had been
done by an old friend how is now SK named Dick Rosmini, a genius and one
of the pioneers in multi-channel recording and in home recording. Even
if one has no interest in the telephone system this is a must simply
because it is a work of art.
Now some Teletype content. The M35 shown has a slashed letter O.
I remember this from the 35's we had as computer terminals at
Hewlett-Packard. This is actually a Swedish character. I wondered why
they did not adopt the long established slashed zero to differentiate
zero from the letter O, there may have been a good reason, perhaps the
slashed zero was a strictly American convention where the Swedish (and
probably other languages) slashed letter O would be more readily
recognized for what it was.
The fact that human minds were able to conceive, design, and
construct this machine is awesome (in its original meaning). Certainly
the design of a computer CPU is on at least the same order. What an
amazing film.
