Ok I measured my reels they are 5 inches across. maybe not code
code machine.
my black 31 here at the museum ( non dynamoter version) seems to use
smaller reels of tape than the western union green ones in the fold out
cases we have.

The M-209 was a palm sized hand operated encoder/decoder.
the rolls of 3/8" paper are very small… about 4" across as I recall.
Designed to fit in a soldiers pocket.
The only use for a Teletype was the tape printer associated with the
KLB-47 crypto assembly.
With a single roll in a M14 tape printer the whole roll would be gone very
quickly at 60 wpm.
