Cranks of that general type were used for several things  besides paper
winding.  There was a Model 14 used at test positions  where the range
finder adjustment was brought out to the front and worked  by a crank.

There were also some test sets  generating intentionally distorted signals
where a crank was used to adjust  the amount of distortion.
