     The Jaquet-Droz automata are very impressive, especially since
they were built in 1770.  I've been to the museum in Neuchatel to see
them work.  They demo them once a month.

     Once you realize how they work, it's amazing they were able to
hold the tolerances necessary.  There are cams where the height
of the cam addresses which letter out of the whole upper and lower
case alphabet.  Adjustable cams - the Writer is reprogrammable.
