Ok.. so IANAL, but..

In the USA, it's clear that an individual may construct a model, copy,
rendition or facsimile of effectively anything their heart desires. This sort
of activity falls (among other precedents) under 1st Amendment rights of
free speech, expression, and so on.

Representing such an item as genuine, or offering it for sale, hire or
other commercial purpose under such pretense, etc. enters into totally
different territory, and would obviously constitute fraud to some degree and may
trammel the property rights of others.

Likewise, there was nothing illegal about reverse-engineering certain
electronic encryption schemes, such as the DVD (DECSS) code which was intended
to lock-in control of DVD-disc playback. Distributing the results, on the
other hand, may (or may NOT) have crossed boundaries.

Don't forget to post a pic of your hacked-up API placard! ;-)

When restoring a Model 15 to its days of glory as a news machine at a
radio station, is it illegal to hunt down an Associated Press plate to attach
to the front? If not, how does one go about finding one?
