Well, sometimes OT is interesting. I was at the park not long ago where
there were a bunch of radio controlled model airplanes. Some are fairly
large. I don't know how high they get, I don't think any of these were over
perhaps a couple of hundred feet. Also, not long ago I was in Long Beach
with a friend just looking around. I saw a wedding being photographed by
means of a radio controlled model helicopter. Do any of these qualify as
drones? Does a drone have to be a full-sized aircraft? You could do a lot
of damage with with a model airplane.

Awesome. Very cool (and scary).
On a side note, the videography company actually broke the law by doing
this (don’t shoot me, I’m just the messenger!) The FAA has banned the use
of drones for commercial use until at least 2017 while they figure out what
the laws should be. Drones for home use are allowed but there are
restrictions including that they cannot be flown higher than 500 feet (clearly,
this one was 1500 or more feet). A commercial exemption can be granted by
the FAA but to date, only 33 (or something like that) have been granted. AND
the grant only allows you to fly as experimental aircraft on only 6
airfields in the US. So this guy did break the law, technically speaking. The FAA
has fined a small handful of people for doing this.
Europe is much more progressive here and they have a permit process to
allow commercial drone use.

PS This is WAY off topic, so if you have any questions about this, contact
me directly. Thanks you (and the list members will thank you too!)
