If you're talking about the paper spindle, a metal one was on ebay 
recently.  But you can make a wooden one with a dowel or piece of broom
handle cut to length and use a couple of nails or screws for the ends.
The early M15 spindles were made of wood that way, with the addtion of
grooves and garter springs to hold the roll centered on the spindle.
I haven't found those to be necessary.
