Sounds like spark-paper to me.

There were earlier forms of spark recording that predate the
form discussed in the Wikipedia page.  Fisher Scientific
sells 5/8" (1.6 cm) spark paper tape in 100 meter rolls.
You can also get sparkers designed to record on spark paper.
I have no idea where to get wider spark paper, but
obviously, it is still being made.
