As I remember, the "output" such as it was, was taken off of the plate
of a 6V6
and connected to a stylus that touched the paper.
The more output from the 6V6, the blacker it was on the paper. And yes it
smoked when it did that.
I also vaguely remember it printing a negative image too.
I also seem to remember it wasn't really worth a crap on gray scale either.
It was primarily used to send written messages that required a signature.
