GN OMs;
Hey Dave;
"Running Open" is taken from the "loop" (that the 60ma current is on
that signals the magnets/keyboard) is "open" or "broken". In the
"closed" state the machine just sits there idling.
"Running Open" puts a strain on the machine - because it never has a
"rest condition" - when the clutches are locked off and there is less
load on the motor - so "running open" consumes a lot of energy but
produces nothing of value.
Nothing is printed (if there WAS something in the location of the BLANK
character, it would print - but there isn't so the machine just cycles).
In Teletype circles, we refer to someone who is talking but
gibberish is coming out of his mouth as: "Did you hear what so-and-so
said?" "Yeah - aw, he's just running open again".
If you'd like a model 28-RO (printer, but no keyboard) I have one that
is in good condition. It is FREE - BUT you'll have to pay shipping which
could be a bit on the expensive side. I'm guessing the machine weighs in
at 30-40 pounds. You'll also need to procure a T.U. (terminal unit) that
will decode the mark-and-space-tones and turn them into 60ma current to
feed the machine. If you like it enough, you can easily swap out the RO
base for a KEYBOARD base and have a fully operational 28-KSR.

Oh, great: This new "Day Planner" I bought has
nothing but blank pages. Now I have no idea
what I'm supposed to be doing tomorrow.
