Oh, yes. I made my living off Rupert for nearly thirty years so I
suppose should not do any hand biting. However, while many who come to
the U.S. must struggle for many years to become citizens its also
possible to do it very quickly if you bring money. I am not quite sure
how Rupert did it but he didn't take long. The reason was mainly
because in order to hold a license for a broadcast station in the U.S.
you must be a citizen. This dates back to the end of WW-1 and the
desire of the U.S. Navy to have all "wireless" communication here under
U.S. control. At the time the only sources of complete wireless systems
were Marconi (British) and Telefunken (German). Legislation was passed
to make ownership of radio legal only for U.S. citizens or corporations
under their control. The Nave originally thought they would have the
monopoly but Republicans were in power so it became a civil function
under government regulation. The General Electric company financed a
buy-out of the American Marconi company and oversaw the formation of the
Radio Corporation of America. There are many sources for more
information, one of the best is Captain Howeth's book _Communications
Electronics in the United States Navy_ available on line for nothing.
If anyone is interested in this history I can provide a decent
bibliography, much of which is available on line.
