[GreenKeys] Homemade penetrating oil

Interesting. I just got my acetone from a hardware store in Greece and the steel can says “pure acetone” on it... smells like it, doubt it’s some kind of penguin-friendly “substitute” like mineral spirits these days.

I did shake up the mixture each time just before applying, like an Italian salad dressing, and after several applications over a couple of days (accompanied by gentle hammer taps) I was able to break the rusty nuts free from the equally rusty bolts with surprisingly little effort.

That was me. And I used 50/50 power steering fluid (the actual test compound, from the original article) mixed with acetone. Same thing, they separated - not miscible.

The PSF I used was cheap, generic stuff, and not labeled as synthetic, semi-synthetic, para-synthetic, or any such thing. So what the heck is up?

Is there some sort of "environmentally friendly" pseudo-acetone going around out there? I simply don't know what to make of it..

Having read many times in the past about a 50/50 mix of acetone and ATF being the best penetrating oil to free rusted/stuck parts, I thought I'd try it myself.
I don't have any ATF handy, but it's just a refined 20W oil with a different additive package... anyway I mixed a few cc's of pure acetone with the same amount of 10W-40 part-synthetic motor oil. It appeared to mix fully when shaken, but half an hour later there were two distinct layers of fluid in the bottle. I'm trying it out on a couple of rusted bolts (shake, apply a few drops, tap with hammer, repeat over several days). I am quite surprised (as was a previous poster) that they didn't mix and stay mixed.
