I remember in the early '60s they used to have wooden racks with the
funnel top glass bottles of oil next to the gas pumps. I also remember
one of my first jobs where I had to refill said bottles at the beginning of
the day from the bulk storage drums in the service bay.
The big names in quart cans, of course, were Valvoline, Quaker State,
Castrol, and one other I can't remember. But what I do remember was
that "I can't remember name" was the one you could guarantee that
after a couple of years, you would have a perfect wax mold of the inside
of your valve cover. ;-)
Of course, there were the "Add a 1/2 quart of Marvel Mystery Oil to
your engine" camp.
Then there were the hundreds of "no name" brands sold in gas stations
and road side stops.
