I'll gladly add to what's there if you learn something or have
long-term experience with other alternative oils.  Short term
experience hardly matters, as the big issues are gummy residue
and effects on plastic parts.  In the short run, 3-in-1 household
oil will work.  In the very short term, even linseed oil will
work, but of course, it will polymerize to gum in about a day
and continue hardening over the following months until it is
a hard durable varnish.
