[GreenKeys] New To Me 33 ASR

Gents,

Thank you all for the kind greetings and information. I am astounded to see
how many parts are available, because largely I'd been led to believe that
parts were as hard to come by as surplus machines at this point, and that in
many cases when something breaks (or sproings its way into the same dimension
that your socks go to in the wash), that you'd pretty much have to buy another
unit to get parts for. I'm glad to see this isn't always the case.

I'm not terribly concerned over original vs. reproduction parts, and if
reproduction parts are cheaper or likely to last longer - I'm all in favor of
those. I'm less concerned about historical accuracy as I am functionality and
appearance. I think my machine looks well enough now, even with the recently
repaired breakage on the cover, but it'd just look that much better with a
front panel trim piece to cover the screws and mode knob.

Wayne,

The part I'm talking about that is broken is the gray plastic selector from the
4-position switch on the automatic reader. Mine is complete, just the lever
that sticks through the top cover has decided to part ways with the functional
bit inside the reader. I can send a photo for accurate selection in a few
hours when I get home. Thanks for the reminder for the orientation of the
paper feeds. I understand why each are the way they are, but probably would
have forgotten to think about it by the time I put the cover back on. Now I
will remember, thanks to your reminder.

Dave,

Sorry for bidding against you on this one - I still expected it to go over what
it did, and still wish I'd spent less on it than I had... it's just that these
seem to be hard to come by in my area in any condition, and this one had nice
key caps that all seem to match (with very little splitting, most notably the D
key is split, but it's still intact). It has minimal yellowing (which doesn't
scare me much), and it was at least functioning well enough to do what it was
doing... and seemed to be good enough that I might have had some luck in
repairing it. But aside from all of those things, the number one thing that
interested me about it is that it has the automatic reader on it, and my little
Altair 680 can apparently handle reader control. I figured that would be fun
to use. I don't recall, but I don't think the one I had in the 80's had the
automatic reader. Anyhow - it sounds like it would have gone to a good home
whether you or I had bought it. I'm just pleased that I sorted everything out,
even without having prior experience repairing these. I took it on as a
challenge, I wanted as little assistance as I could and still end up with a
working machine. That's a great way to learn things! :)

I look forward to reading the list, and learning more. Hopefully in the future
I can get more equipment to restore to service, and find other ways to use it.
For the longest time I've wanted to get my amateur license, digital modes
interest me more than anything, and being the vintage nut that I am, I'd love
to do RTTY on a real machine someday. I'm glad to see that it seems that some
of you fellas still do exactly that! :)

cheers,
j
