[GreenKeys] Dates can be found on some keyboards

That ink-stamped date might indicate when it was refurbished by Teletype. I
have
never seen a date code on any TTY gear otherwise. On the east coast, Western
Electric stamped the refurb date in orange along with the name of the
service center ("CP" stood for College Point, Queens, for example). It was
very noticeable on the side of 28 typing units.
The College Point facility was huge...it was the repository for all TTY
equipment
for the entire NY metropolitan area. Even though we only had one Model 37
in service, at a telco engineering office, there was at least a dozen of
them
stacked on shelves at CP. I once needed the little metal ribbon guide piece
for
the 37 and was sent to the CP shop. They pulled a 37 off the shelf, pulled
out
the part and told me to put it in my pocket. The paperwork to release the
part would have taken a week to fill out and another month to process.
I eventually replaced the 37 with a 40 printer because the 37 kept
jamming the paper. The only TTY Ma Bell formally trained me on was the 37!

Subject: [GreenKeys] Dates can be found on some keyboards
Greenkeyers:
If you were wondering when your Model 28 or 35 keyboard was made, you can
find an ink-stamped date that is visible on the underside of the keyboard.
I looked at a M28 ASR keyboard that is out of its cabinet.
Remove the motor and the intermediate gear assembly. Remove the 154085
plate from the underside of the base. (The intermediate gear assembly is
fastened to the 154085 plate and allows the front to back adjustment.) The
mounting plate may be different if you have a sound reduction intermediate
gear assembly or a gear shift. You should see an ink stamped date from the
spot where the 154085 plate was removed. The date on my keyboard is "AUG 17
1965." My guess would be that the stamped date signifies when the sheet
metal base was made and not when the keyboard was assembled. But that's
just my guess. The ID tag on the keyboard identifies it as an LAK4 ARP, S/N
70257. The Bell System calls this a 28B Perforator Transmitter Base. I
looked at another base and there was a faint but unreadable fragment of a
stamp. It's possible that a cleaning of the base wiped out the ink stamped
date. If you have your keyboard out of the cabinet, a look at the date on
the base might be informative.
