The GPO in the UK used +80 voltds and -80 volts as the mark  and space. 
this 
was supplied by the GPO repeatyerstqation or exchange. .  It was therefore 
conveint to have 160 volt DC motors i most  situations.
i was a GPO engineer in the 1960s...
