As far as I recall the Creed Model 7 teleprinters for the British Post 
Office were all supplied with DC motors. I used to run mine from a 
full-wave rectified output of a 240v to 120v power transformer.

I have no idea what the reason was, but as previous correspondents have 
said DC mains supplies were around a lot longer than you  might think.
