A very handy trick is to let Google do the work for you. In the search results for the PDF there is often a "cached" pull down beside the title. This gives you the searchable text file that Google created from the PDF even if the doc had not been OCRed originally. They don't always do all the pages but it can be an easy way to get/search text.
