Welcome to the petrol-chemical industry.
Typewriter keys, film, tool handles, radio knobs and a plethora of
common every day things made between the '30s and later have
various problems due to the plastics depolymerizing.
It's the same mechanism that caused foam to turn either to dust
or goo, drive belts to suddenly become black tar etc.
