I'm 58. In '76 the ByteShop computer store in Fresno opened about a
half mile from my home. I walked in and told the owner I was going to
work there, and I wanted to buy a computer and trade out the cost until
it was paid off. The owner scratched his head and agreed. I worked
there soldering together circuit boards while going to college for the
next 2 years. My first computer was an Imsai which I still have. I
picked up a 33 to use as a terminal and loaded & saved programs on paper
tape until I upgraded to a Tarbell cassette tape. I had also used a 33
in high school that was set up as a computer terminal. I still only type
with 3 fingers which is sort of what you had to do on the teletype
keyboards. I gave away the 33 and one other I had acquired when I moved
out of state in '89. I picked up and restored a 33 a couple years ago
with help from Greenkeys members and have it working again on my Imsai
computer.
I has helped my dad (WD6GVA) obtain his ham radio license in the 70's.
I had taken electronics classes in high school so I could help him with
that, plus we practiced Morse code together which was required back
then. I was more interested in electronics so I built several projects
out of the ARRL handbook and set up a glass teletype for RTTY for my
dad. I had also messed around with surplus radio gear (PRC 6 & 8 &
others) with a Jr. high & high school friends. I was lucky to have two
good surplus electronics stores in Fresno.
My dad remained an active ham until he passed away in '92. I finally
got around to getting my ham license a couple years ago. Over the
years I have started my own computer businesses and partnered with
others in computer sales & service companies. I wouldn't want to give up
the power and features of modern computers and devices, but I still miss
and talk about the "good old days". I have a collection of antique
computers and peripherals from the 60's, 70's, & 80's.
