We have one of these in the AWA Museum. It was know as the Dow Jones
"News Ticker" or "Broad Ticker". It is sort of a cross between a stock
ticker and a page printer. It is a very simple mechanism with a large
type wheel and prints on about a 4" wide roll of paper. I assume it
operates on the same principle as the stock tickers. There is a pocket
on the side of the machine to hold a scissors to cut off the paper and a
hook or clip on the front to hold the latest news.
It was not made by Teletype Corp, so it is not a "Teletype machine", but
I don't know who made them for Dow Jones. I have seen pictures of a
similar printing mechanism with the name "J. Burry, Inv. & Mfr. New
York" on it and patent dates of 1901-04. The unit we have has no
manufacture's name on the printing mechanism, just "Dow Jones" on the
front of the case. There were Teletype Corp. M15ROs & M28ROs (including
the M28RO wall mount) available for this Dow Jones News service, also.
These machines provided financial news to businesses up until 1970, when
Dow Jones upgraded to an electronic system, the Dow Jones 300 that
operated at 300wpm. Dow Jones did not want to take back these obsolete
machines, so they sold them in place for $1.00. If the Craig's List
seller was the original user, he will make a killing if can sell it now
for @1200!!
I don't know how he can claim that it is "still operational!!" when the
system was shut down 45 years ago. Maybe he made an electronic interface??
Have fun,
