I worked on those tickers, the ones that resemble like model 28's (clutches and other parts).  One place used clear tape instead of paper and projected it on a screen.  Then Trans Jet or Trans Lux (I forget which) came along with the revolving metal boards with green dots to form the characters.  They were pretty easy to work on and no purple fingers when you went home.
