[GreenKeys] KSR33 fixed! Problem and Solution notes

I finally got my KSR33 working (in local mode, next is to try line mode)
with the help of Wayne and Dave.  I just wanted to say thanks again for all
the help from both of them, especially Wayne who sent multiple emails
explaining the mechanical workings and what I should be looking for.

 

As a recap:  I have two units, an ASR33 and a KSR33.  The KSR was chattering
in line mode for some reason.  The solution was multiple things.  Each one
fixed moved us down the road only to find yet another problem.  Here are the
things fixed:

 

1.       Initial reason for chattering in line mode was that the selector
magnet wasn't energizing.  The fault was in the big flat green resistor in
the UCC.  It read open circuit on the 1450 ohm and 2k ohm tabs (the 750 ohm
tabs were fine).  I was able to use the green resistor from my working ASR33
to continue to debug the KSR.

2.       Once the selector magnet was fixed there was still chattering.
This was now due to the selector trip lever (hook shaped part that catches
the clutch) not catching properly due to being out of adjustment.  Adjusting
this fixed the chattering.

3.       During testing I was using the clothes pin method to force the
armature over.  Be careful!  I popped the armature return spring loose when
pulling out the clothes pin (actually using a plastic part which probably
contributed to this happening).  I was quite depressed when after getting
the chattering to stop then all of a sudden I couldn't type at all!  The
popped spring was the problem.

4.       Finally back to typing and the carriage wouldn't advance forward
properly.  Using the maintenance lever for carriage return did return the
carriage, but it never reset so that the carriage could properly advance one
character at a time.  Turned out that the problem was the dashpot was so
dirty inside that it wouldn't allow the carriage to move all the way into
full return, therefor not resetting the carriage return lever.  Again,
thanks to Wayne for pointing me in the right direction on this problem
(which I was making out to be more difficult than it was and looking for all
sorts of bent bars or missing springs).  Cleaning out the dashpot and adding
a bit of oil fixed this issue.  And that was the last one!

 

I would have never found all these problems without the help from Dave and
Wayne, or at least I would have given up sooner.  Just having someone help
you makes you a bit more accountable to actually try to find the problem and
get it fixed.  Thanks again guys, I really appreciate it.

 

I hope this list of problems and fixes I found in my KSR33 helps someone
else with similar problems.
