While on vacation in Bejing several years ago, the main museum
downtown had a huge black marble wall. Starting at a huge rock with
some caricature writing.
"This is the oldest now specimen of Chinese caricature writing."
The wall then proceeded to wind about in a long serpentine path.
Each new segment had an example of the next generation of caricature
writing.
At a point near the middle, the guide pointed out, "You'll note that this
bears a striking resemblance to Japanese writing. The reason for this,
is this was the period of time that the Japanese split off from the
Chinese."
Later on at the back of the tour bus, I related an awful story I'd heard
about a Chinese princess and an orangutan. After the guide stopped
laughing and composed herself, she looked at me and said, "How did
you know about THAT?"
