Most modems require a time period between +++ and ATH, unless configured to not have one... or unless they're terrible modems in the first place.

This is, in a nutshell, exactly what "Hayes Compatible" means.  Their big piece of intellectual property in that regard wasn't the AT command set
itself, but the escape sequence with pause.

A good sysop didn't use escape codes to control the modem for disconnection though - they'd have that disabled, and rely on dropping DTR (with the
appropriate modem configuration) to cause the modem to hang up.

The +++ had to come from the end that you wanted to control, so if that were posted to a message base, it would be transmitted to the BBS modem and the
caller's modem would ignore it entirely.

On the other hand, some "dumb" terminal programs didn't check the state of DCD, instead, they looked for "NO CARRIER" on a new line by itself, and then
assumed the modem was disconnected and went back into their menu mode.
